After my first time attending the Knit and Crochet Club at VT, I was overcome by the support of the members. Kendall Seeley was kind enough to take time out of her crocheting to teach me how to knit even though I knew absolutely nothing. Her patience in teaching me and her selflessness by letting me borrow her needles I am extremely grateful for. THANK YOU, KENDALL!

Joe Samaha, President of the Virginia Tech Victims (VTV) Family Outreach Foundation, met with Jeff Allison, Special Adviser for Campus Public Safety, FBI Office of Law Enforcement Coordination to get to know one another and talk about the new federally-funded National Center for Campus Public Safety that Jeff and others had been working toward since December 2004. Jeff was uplifted by hearing about the life of Reema Samaha - her accomplishments and contributions to society before April 2007, and her continuing legacy, which reminds all of us that "we are our brother's keeper." Joe also shared his vision for the VTV Family Outreach Foundation and the 32 National Campus Safety Initiative, and how these efforts might dovetail with the National Center. Thank you Joe for honoring me with the Actively Caring for People wristband. Your courage and grace are an inspiration for all of us. I display the wristband with pride and humility, and will soon pass it on to another actively caring person. Take good care! Jeff

I was walking across the drillfield on a rainy day to get to class when I was informed that my backpack open. This was a suprise to me because at least 6 people walked passed me and had not said a thing. this random classmate went out of her way to help me when others just stood by and ignored it.

Carmen was an incredible young women whose life was cut short by a tragic accident on a family vacation. Although I did not know Carmen, I do know her best friend. That is how I learn about her amazing spirit and thirst for life, which definitely rubbed off on her best friend. Who has since shared it with me. Although only knowing her for two months this young women told me about Carmen and her zest. Today, on Carmen's birthday I helped my new friend by making her a "10/23/13 thrival kit" for this difficult day. It included some very simple things to make today as easy as possible. Just forty-five minutes ago I texted her to see how she was doing when I realized she was walking towards me. She told me to close my eyes and stick out my hand. When I opened them I was surprised by the green band I found there. As she explained what it meant and what I was to do, I was totally overwhelmed. Even on the hardest day of her year, this girl was recognizing me for doing something that to me was just normal. I am so thankful to have made such a great friend at Tech. Carmen's spirit lives on, I am sure in this incredible young women.

During a meeting today in Squires student center, my friend Lester loaned his pen to a colleague in a meeting to write something down - since he hadn't brought anything to write with. Not only did he loan his pen but he ripped off a piece of his paper to share with a complete stranger in the meeting with us. He had also done this a few moments earlier when he wrote down the e-mail address of a colleague on campus who another person in the meeting wanted to get in touch with - without even asking. Lester Actively Cared for two separate people within 30 minutes of each other and I wanted to make sure he was noticed for this.

When bringing things back to the McComas after Gobblerfest, a few items fell out of the boxes we were carrying. Ushan Abeysekera was passing by at the time and did not hesitate to jump right in to help us out. Thank you for taking the extra few minutes to help out your fellow Hokies!

My favorite animal has always been a pig. When Patrick found out how much I loved them, he offered to take my friend and me to a pig farm! After the first visit he actually asked permission of the barn managers to see if we could go back and hold the baby pigs. Thank you, Patrick, for taking time out of your day to actively care by helping me fulfill a dream that I have had since the last time I held a pig (over 10 years ago).

One night after RA training...I ran into my friend Adam. He had a long, grueling day of OChem finals and had missed our RA dinner. He was tired and hungry and so I gave him one of my bagels/bananas/peanut butter to nom on. It was great to talk and catch up, and a week or so later he surprised me with a AC4P bracelet. It's funny how important that little green plastic has meant to me, and I intend on making another deserving individual just as happy. Thank you Adam...and thank you AC4P!

I was socializing in my old office suite when I received a warm greeting and hug my a new friend named Gabby. Gabby and I had met once before, but we had never really engaged in actual conversation. With my goal of meeting one new person everyday, Gabby's warm demeanor, outgoing personality, and bubbly disposition made me feel very comfortable learning about her and sharing about me. Gabby clearly values making those around her comfortable, being open and approachable, and taking the time to learn about others, and in turn helping others learn about her. For making my day and making my act of "the one new person I met today" extremely memorable, I shared Actively Wristband number 55839 with Gabby.

I was at a halt on putting the finishing touches on my new office and I had some things that needed to be hung. I use a wheelchair to get around because cannot stand or walk and I had not had a free moment to ask another co-worker in the office to hang a bulletin board and a few other things on the walls for me. Two of my co-workers, Jonathan and Annie, stopped by to help me hang them without even asking. They even made a make-shift level out of a ruler - it was quite impressive. I am very grateful for their actively caring actions!

Virginia Tech has a late night dinning facility called DX. Anyone who has bought food there late night has most likely had some type of interaction with a woman who works there named Anne. Anne is so sweet every time I go to DX. Not matter what time of the day or night, sober, or intoxicated, she is so kind to every student who walks through the door. On Friday night she asked me how my night had been and expressed genuine interest. I have thought about giving her a wristband in the past, but that night was special to me. I hope she reads this and realizes how much her kindness brightens my day/ night every time we chat. Thank you Anne, you make the Hokie Nation better!
